Journal Notes

Week 8

Day 38 – Monday, August 11, 2003

I realized today that I had accidentally saved over the last version of my project document. I spent some time adding the lost information to the document and making more changes. I also tried working on adding an interface to the program that displays the results of each individual step of the EM algorithm. However, because I do not have a thorough understanding of the EM Algorithm and the code implementing it, along with the fact that I only have about 2.5 weeks left, I decided not to continue on with it. Within the next 2.5 weeks I would like to continue testing, complete my document/website. I also need to spend some time working on a presentation that I need to give next Wednesday. I am however going to wait until I meet with an anatomist before I continue on with my testing. I also attended another good-bye lunch, this time for Katie. We went to Cedars, an Indian restaurant with delicious food!

Day 39 – Tuesday, August 12, 2003

Early in the afternoon, I attended a Summer Undergraduate Research Program Lecture in which David Masuda was to give a lecture on careers in Biomedical Informatics. Unfortunately, he only talked about informatics and said that he had no knowledge of actual job prospects in biomedical informatics. After this lecture, I met with Onard, an anatomist who was going to help me identify arteries/veins in the image slices of the Visible Human Man. Onard gave me a few books that might help me identify the arteries/veins. I was able to identify the major veins/arteries and organs in the slices, but identifying the veins/arteries was more difficult. I will meet with Cornelius who is the “true anatomist” according to Onard.

Day 40 – Wednesday, August 13, 2003

Last night I had run the program on the esophagus. I continued running it through the program, and here are the results: Esophagus ! Linda and some others were very excited that I was able to get the program to work on it! The door is now open to running the program on other tubular programs. I also met with Cornelius, and he said that it is easier for them to identify the arteries/veins after I have the 3D reconstructions of them. Therefore, sending them the reconstructions that I already have will be my next step. I also attended the weekly SIRS meeting in which we further discussed the EMILY interface. I will help them perform a study within the next few weeks that they need to perform in order to satisfy the reviewers of the paper that they had submitted on EMILY. I will continue on with testing tonight.
